Groudon Empty Groudon

12/16/2014, 12:38 am
Groudon 383 Groudon SiwrCNE Groudon 383-p
Groudon: 100/150/100/100/90/90   Primal Groudon: 100/180/160/150/90/90
I was never quite found of the legendary feud between Groudon and Kyogre. To me, it always seemed like a one-sided battle. When I first played Emerald, I couldn't help but laugh when I saw Groudon and Kyogre fighting in Sootopolis City. Kyogre had the whole ocean while Groudon had a small patch of land. Not to mention Groudon's typing left it weak to water. When I heard that Groudon's new form was getting the Fire type as well as the Ground-type, I thought that was the final nail in the coffin for it. But then its ability, Desolate Land, was revealed - it blocks all water-type moves from use, effectively giving it a new immunity. This amazing ability leaves Groudon to be one of the best Pokémon of all time next to Mega Rayquaza - boasting an obscenely high Attack stat paired with great physical defense, Groudon plays the game to win.

Groudon @ Red Orb - Adamant Nature (Desolate Land)
EVs: 104 HP / 252 Attack / 96 Sp. Defense / 56 Speed
Set Name: Rock Polish Sweeper
move 1: Fire Punch / Overheat / Stone Edge
move 2: Precipice Blades / Earthquake
move 2: Dragon Claw
move 4: Rock Polish

You'll notice that the EV spread from this set is very similar to a particular Smogon set. This is because I had the same spread except with the 96 EVs in Defense before the analysis was ever posted! Whether you want to believe that or not is entirely up to you, but anyway...this set boosts Groudon's decent speed using none other than Rock Polish. This move doubles Groudon's speed, and with the given EV spread, allows it to outpace Choice Scarf Zekrom, Landorus-T, and below after a single Rock Polish. The remaining three moves allow Groudon to break through a bunch of specific threats, such as Zekrom, Skarmory, and even Kyogre. Fire Punch is boosted by the sun, and is overall a solid choice. Overheat, despite the Adamant nature (which reduces special attack), hits Pokémon with high defense harder than Fire Punch. Stone Edge can be used instead if Ho-Oh or non-mega Rayquaza bug your team, however. Precipice Blades is Groudon's ideal Ground-type move, which is more powerful but less accurate than Earthquake. Earthquake can be used if you prefer accuracy over power, so it shouldn't be an issue. Dragon Claw smacks Latias, Latios, and Mega Rayquaza.

wip.
