Primal Groudon vs. Primal Kyogre
9/15/2014, 10:23 am
With the upcoming Hoenn remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire on the horizon, new megas, features, and abilities have been showcased. But one of the coolest new features is Primal Reversion, a change that Groudon and Kyogre can undergo to restore themselves to a form where they were more powerful.
Groudon always got the short end of the stick. It was always a one-sided battle. Kyogre got the entire ocean, and Groudon got a small patch of land. Not to mention he's weak to water. His Primal Reversion, while cool-looking, adds the Fire-type, creating a 4x weakness to Kyogre's nasty water-type moves.
And then there was the most recent reveal, causing Groudon's popularity to skyrocket. His Primal Reversion's ability, Desolate Land, creates harsh sunlight that fizzles out water-type moves, causing them to not hit. This means that if Groudon switches in on Kyogre and thus activates the harsh sunlight, Kyogre is unable to hit Groudon with water-type moves, making him only weak to ground. His typing also makes him immune to Thunder Wave, the most common paralysis move, and burns, which were a huge problem prior to its Primal Reversion.
Though it seems Groudon now has the upper hand, that doesn't mean that Kyogre isn't good. Should these two make it to ubers, it's gonna be BW's weather wars all over again. Before I get into detail, Kyogre's ability, Primordial Sea, causes a heavy rain to form that causes fire-type moves to be rendered useless by the heavy rain. Kyogre already resists fire, so this isn't as helpful as Groudon's Desolate Land. So. Here's where it gets good. If Groudon and Kyogre are both the first 'mon sent out in a battle, the faster one will activate their weather condition first. So, if you send out Primal Kyogre and the opponent sends out a Primal Groudon that just so happens to be faster than you, the Extreme Sunlight will form, but then since Kyogre is slower, its Primordial Sea will win out and cause heavy rain over the sunlight.
Groudon itself is NOT IMMUNE TO WATER. It is only the weather condition. So if you catch Primal Groudon in heavy rain, he's pretty much waiting to be flushed away by Kyogre's signature move, Origin Pulse. Which is a water-type move. To make things worse for Groudon, his Sp. Defense is lacking...meaning he'll pretty much always be one-shotted by Kyogre. So I ask you again.
Which do you think will be better?

IF they were in a one-on-one battle with Kyogre being slower, Kyogre'd be the victor, but if Groudon were slower, Groudon....'s chances of winning would improve. It's really all up to preference and how you train your pokemon, so I have no opinion.

Groudon gets Solar Beam. But with its middling Sp. Atk, it does less than 20%. However, Earthquake is a clean 2HKO. Fun fact; Primal Groudon is the heaviest Pokemon to ever exist.

The faster one wins, Once Supersunshine/rain is up, nothing can change it unless the pokemon switches out, so if Groudon happens to be faster, then Kyogre loses

I thought Primordial Sea would cancel out desolate land?

Well with their new abilities it is hard to decide. Groudon has Desolate Land and Kyogre has Primordial Sea. I have looked at the moves they can learn too! Groudon's best move set to win Kyogre would be Solar Beam, Fissure (1 hit KO), Thunder, Bulk Up. However, Kyogre could turn the tables with Sheer Cold (1 hit KO), Brick Break, Blizzard, Mimic (If transferred). Its a 50 on 50 fight, but I would like to see a fight with these two pokemon having this moveset, or something similar.

The slower one is the one that has the weather advantage, it's always been like that iirc, and thus, if it was 1v1, Groudon would win

0 SpA Groudon Solar Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Kyogre: 90-106 (22.3 - 26.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recoveryUltra mario wrote:Well with their new abilities it is hard to decide. OHKO moves are also banned, so that's irrelevant.
