Last Post Wins

Chris hadn't had any assignments ever since Mel had left to aid the dimensional guardians, so he spent his time roaming the halls.

During one of his daily walks, Sam had met up with him and began walking beside him.

- You've been roaming for 2 weeks now...
- Not having any missions is so boring.
- None of us have been getting missions, but we're still doing fine.

The duo had walked up to a heavily armored door with turrets next to it, so Chris turned around instead of trying to walk into the demonic wing of the academy.

- Why are you here, anyways?
- I got you something, thinking you would find it useful.

Sam handed an amulet to Chris, it had a small golden shield fixed to it, containing a glowing orb at its center. Just as Chris began to wonder what the shiny component of the pendant was, Sam spoke once more.

- Despite you never seeing them, the academy has a collection of artifacts that permanently watch over our vitals. If it's shiny, whoever it's linked to is alive.
- Who's linked to this one, then?
- I'm pretty sure you already know.
- Cool aegis pattern, though. I'll wear it for the time being.

Chris searched in his pockets, taking one of the crystals Eli had given him before his own disappearance. As he held it in his hands, he felt his form change to being a cyborg once more. His systems made a soft whirr as they came to life, becoming silent seconds after.

- I shall contact the Scavenger Squadron. They're likely willing to aid us.
- Chris, the Scavengers only serve to locate the corpses of those chosen by the elements, since they never decay.
- If we fail, that's exactly what we'll end up finding.

With a boom that resonated through the air, Unit 0103 had gone to the crypts where the past heroes had been kept. Sam rushed through the normal section to make it to the collection of Sepulchers, but he imminently remembered he wasn't going to run in the crypts themselves. Through the purple hallways filled with bright chambers containing bodies in pristine condition, a presence always lingered. It was felt by all who entered that part of the academy, Unit 0103 acknowledging it full well as he stopped in the middle of a pathway.

The air around him felt cold, much colder than it should be. If he were still breathing, there might have even been a small cloud forming when he exhaled. He scanned around the dark area, searching for anything odd, yet aside from the tombs, there was nothing to see. Instead, Unit 0103 took a break while Sam was going to catch up.

He examined the transparent case to his left, as all of them contained a plate identifying the fallen, with brief info on them.

Chosen by the element of Darkness
Slain in a rebellion led by the forces of Darkness after agreeing with the current hero chosen by light at the time, Sarah, to use the forces to aid civilians. The civilians were not protected, and both Gabriel and Sarah fell within the same minute.

Cause of death- "

" That part won't be necessary. " Unit 0103 thought to himself as he saw the wound in the
hero's torso. Some demonic weaponry was in use to take that kind of damage. To his right, Sarah should have been visible, but the casing was opaque with text glowing red on the plaque.

" Slain by subterranean Beholder, Level 4 permission required for vision. "

Subterranean Beholders were hated by everyone, especially by humanity. As their name implies, they would lurk underground, undetected until they could ambush efficiently. As with all Beholders, they could fire beams from their eyes, but that was only a last resort for that variety. Chris had personally purged them all, preventing their bloody habits from existing any longer.

Unit 0103 remembered a good amount of deaths from those demons. Had he been human, he certainly would have been sad, but he only felt acknowledgement.

A masculin voice emerged behind him.

- Look, another one!

As Chris' mechanical form turned to face the spirit of Gabriel, he heard who he assumed was Sarah behind him. "He's almost as cold as you are now!" she said with a chuckle, mocking Unit 0103's reactions.

- Why is a hero of darkness' soul still here? Your role was lost.

- Perhaps, but are you truly the one who has it now?

- This rambling doesn't aid me.

- The element's being disturbed, your powers are weakening, your throne is being stolen and you're here instead of defending it? Get. Good.

- I see that advice really helped you. Look at what a great ruler you are now.

- I learned that the demonic forces cannot be used for good, but you can contain them without issues. The only thing you need is the title. If you're no longer chosen, they'll kill you.

- If that's what you think, I suppose it warrants investigation.

Unit 0103 tried to warp himself to his realm, the spell failing to start. He feigned dispelling it, trying again only for the warping incantation to fade away a second before starting for good.

- Having trouble with that?

- No, everything's fine.

The cyborg drew some lines in midair, creating runes that warped him and faded out of existence. The spirits laughed as the hero of darkness left to defend his title. It seemed like a wave of nostalgia, of days long past...

As the mechanical hero warped from the darkened skies into a crater of stone, he heard a distant engine roaring. He looked up to see the Scavenger crew's armored vehicle, which was almost a tank without a cannon. It was using an experimental engine to jump over gaps as a fast method of transportation to Chris' throne, leaving a trail of blue smoke behind it while boosting...
