My thoughts of Ocarina of Time's Story
5/3/2015, 10:29 pm
You know, Zelda is known for having absolutely no problems in it's story. And the timeline? Genius! Truely a masterpiece. But, if- and this is a big if- if there were problems in it... well...
- Spoiler:
- I personally didn't enjoy the storyline of Ocarina of Time too much. I just felt it to be pretentious often times, where many events were either unneeded or explained improperly.
Starting at the beginning of my issues is that Link has to save the Great Deku Tree in the beginning of the game. That's all fine and dandy, until you realize that he will die anyway. I know this is supposed to be sad and all, but we literally know nothing about him besides that "he speaks for the trees" or whatever. So, what you're telling me is that you risked my life for nothing? I would be fine if he said we did it to "prevent the monster Gohma from traveling into the forest" or to "test our courage," but he doesn't. He just says "You helped me, but I'm as good as dead anyway, so have a gem thing."
Then we go to Zelda's castle and see that she's... er... stalking Ganondorf, apparently. I'm honestly fine with this section, though I'm surprised that she knows instantly that this kid she has never met is exactly, without a doubt, the kid that was in her dreams and NOT just a creep.
Moving on, we head to the Goron's place, and this is one of the most INFURIATING things I've seen in a Zelda game. They're starving because they don't have enough rocks to eat. *looks around the cave made completely of stone.* ...Uh-huh. Yeah. EAT THE WALLS, IF YOU NEED TO! Seriously Nintendo, are you expecting me to sympathize with creatures who are willing to starve because the only food they can get isn't "gourmet?" Again, it could have been solved by saying "Dodongo Cavern's rocks aren't poisoned like the ones in Goron City; we decided to live here because we wouldn't have to eat the stone under out feet;" Or better yet, why not just get a BETTER plot point?! This is a horrible plot device to use on the Gorons since it's so contradictory and has to be made very specific! Don't try to make me sympathize with creatures who don't deserve it, because it just makes me angry! Also, game expects you to be too stupid to know what Darunia means by calling you "brother." Even as a kid, I knew what he meant.
As for the Zoras, why do these people let their princess go into the bodily system of a giant fish? I find that extremely irresponsible. Not necessarily as irresponsible as, say, "starving your species due to a lack of quality foods," but it's up there.
Now we get to the castle, Zelda runs off, blah blah blah. We pull out the master sword, fast forward seven years, and learn that by pulling the sword, we allowed for Ganon to enter the Light Realm. This is where I start to feel like there's no point in continuing, storywise. For starters, it's been seven years, WHY is Ganon still spreading his influence? As huge and boring as Hyrule Field is, Hyrule in this game is still rather small. He's had plenty of time to capture Hyrule entirely. Also, why do we need to fix things while in the future? It's the past that you need to change, fixing the future directly still leaves Ganon with controlling Hyrule for the seven years Link was asleep. What's the point in fighting Ganon at the end when we can just put the sword back in the stone, remove the elemental stones from the pedistals to close the Door of Time, and guard them so Ganon doesn't get them, at least for seven years so that Link can become old enough to use the Master Sword's power. This could be much easier and more effective to do than solving a problem seven years too late.
I actually kind of like the Kokiri Forest part of this, mostly because Mido actually seems to develop positively as a character. And maybe because it doesn't have too many flaws that I can point out.
Goron City again, and the only flaw I can pick out is that Darunia enters the Boss Room despite there being a giant lock over the door.
Zora's Domain, and JEEZ! What happened to this place that made it freeze up? I wish I knew, but besides that, no problems. Same with the Shadow Temple, the only problem I have is that I don't understand why the evil, which is supposedly Bongo Bongo, was forced to be in the well and escaped yet was conveniently there to act as a boss fight.
Then there's the Gerudo Desert. Despite it's epic music, I question the possibility of the Gerudo women having "one male every 100 years and he must be their leader." What the heck are you talking about, how are you still in existance?! If there is the possibility- strike that, the GUARANTEE that there will be a male every 100 or so years, what if he dies before the 100 years is up? You obviously need males in your society, otherwise they wouldn't be born in the first place. And if you're suggesting that this is a mutation, then shouldn't his children potentially be male too due to genetics, thus breaking through the 100 years sham? If they die before the 100 years are up, then the Gerudos are screwed. As such, winning the game officially makes the Gerudos extinct. The end.
Ok, so Zelda reveals herself and gives us the light arrows, then gets captured immediately. Smart move, princess, way to take off your disguise despite being able to whisper the secret into our ear instead. So we get to Ganon's castle and face against him. At the end, we see Navi fly away for no reason. Hey, if the Great Deku Tree can do it, why can't his servant? And then an ending sequence.
I see the plot as pretentious, and this may have been one of the things that I disliked about the game but never really thought about. Ever since I was a kid, I never really found the hype in the game. The box art of the Zelda Collector's Edition and the image in the game selection both failed to sell me on the game, and even playing it just bored me. To this day, I don't really see why the game is so well praised beyond it being the first 3D Zelda game.
What do you think? Are there any moments in The Legend of Zelda that irk you?

Its a good story, but realistically... ocarina of time would have completely shattered the space time continuum and there would be way more then three timelines.
